Room×Lab Review · Review updated September 29, 2026
Marin owners praise the look and solid feel, but the 'small' bowl runs large and breakage in transit recurs in low ratings
The retailer aggregate covers 566 unfiltered ratings and can include records excluded from product-specific claims; it is not a qualified-owner count. 455 distinct retailer comments were studied. Crate & Barrel's pooled reviews of its Marin serving bowls, 2011–2026. There are two broad sizes. The small form (about 10 in) comes in Sand, Sage Green, Slate Blue, Matte Black and White, listed at 95–104 oz, plus Blue and Grey 10.25-inch versions whose product pages we did not read. The large form covers White, Blue, Grey, Recycled White and Natural Botanical listings. Only six reviews are filed under the Sand small bowl, and none gives an ownership period. Most first-hand evidence comes from White Small and White Large owners, then Matte Black, Blue and Grey. Size, glaze and finish findings apply only to their own listing. Sharing a feed does not show the bowls are built the same way. The pool also includes gift-givers, whole-collection and service-only comments, so the rating describes this mixed pool, not only Sand owners.
Room×Lab rating: 7.4 out of 10 (limited confidence). Across 566 pooled Marin serving-bowl ratings, owners strongly praise the handmade look, solid weight and salad-ready size. The main caveats are arrival breakage, isolated cracks or chips, a 'small' size that runs large, and only six reviews filed under the Sand glaze itself.
- The small bowl runs larger than its name suggests: Linked records: 13 favorable and 11 critical mentions about the small form's size. — Mostly from White Small owners plus the Sand bowl. Many find it right for a family salad or 4–8 servings. Others bought it for sides or single portions and found it oversized, while some call it perfect for sides. The complaints concern expectations, not defects.
- Sturdy in use for many, with isolated cracks and chips: Linked records: 12 favorable and 6 critical mentions about sturdiness in use. — Good reports run from six months (Matte Black) to a year-plus (White Small, Blue Large) and nearly ten years (white Marin). A White Small cracked on a normal set-down, a White Large on a light bump. A Matte Black chip may be on pasta bowls; Blue (a few chips in two years) and White Small set (chips in a year) reports don't name the piece. None is on Sand.
- Arrival breakage recurs, though replacements are often quick: Linked records: 9 favorable, 13 critical on arrival and replacements; 5 count on both (damaged, then promptly replaced). — Broken or chipped arrivals span many listings, including one Sand bowl. One owner reports no inner padding, and one Matte Black set arrived damaged twice. Several owners say broken pieces were replaced promptly, sometimes without a return. These are individual accounts, not a damage rate.
Before buying
Choose it for a roughly 10-inch, family-salad-sized stoneware bowl with a handmade look, but expect it to run larger than 'small' suggests, check it on arrival, and know that few owners have reported on the Sand glaze itself.
