Room×Lab Review · Review updated September 29, 2026

Marin platter owners love the generous size and handmade look, but broken deliveries and occasional chips temper the praise

The retailer aggregate covers 680 unfiltered ratings and can include records excluded from product-specific claims; it is not a qualified-owner count. 544 distinct retailer comments were studied. Owner evidence covers Crate & Barrel's Marin oval serving platters as one pooled family. Only a handful of reviews are filed under the botanical platter. They are short and mostly about looks, and one platter arrived broken. The current sage, sand and slate blue small ovals have few reviews. Most evidence comes from matte black small and large ovals and from earlier or unlisted white, grey, plain blue and recycled Marin platters, written 2011–2026. The pool mixes about 15.75-inch and 20-inch sizes, different glazes and different clay bodies: the botanical page lists recycled clay oven-safe to 480 F, while the sibling pages read (matte black, sage, sand and slate blue) list stoneware oven-safe to 300 F; the white, grey, plain blue and recycled platter pages were not read. Solid-colour findings are therefore not tested results for the botanical print. No review is filed under the white-and-blue botanical salad platter. Many reviews are gifts, first impressions or remarks about a set.

Room×Lab rating: 7.3 out of 10 (limited confidence). Owners across the Marin oval platter family praise the handmade look, generous size and sauce-holding rim, and older colourways report years of use. The main caveat: botanical-print owners say little beyond looks, and broken arrivals recur across colourways.

  • Roomy enough for roasts, sometimes bigger than expected: Linked records: 15 favorable and 16 critical mentions about size, capacity or storage. — Small-oval owners report a whole roast chicken, a tomahawk ribeye with sides or a 12 lb turkey; large-oval owners report 20–24 lb turkeys. Several found the 'small' bigger than expected, and some returned or regretted the large as too big or hard to fit in cabinets and small kitchens.
  • Broken arrivals recur across colourways: Linked records: 8 favorable mentions of packing or service and 10 critical reports of broken arrivals. — Broken or shattered platters are reported for the botanical, white, grey and blue large and recycled black versions, one owner twice in a row. Outcomes ranged from a prompt replacement to a burdensome repack-and-ship return or no online return on a final-sale item. Others say theirs arrived well wrapped. These are anecdotes, not a breakage rate.
  • Years of use in older colourways, with isolated chips: Linked records: 13 favorable, a few uses to ten years; 5 critical: two chips, one broken and scratched, two worries. — Owners of older white and blue platters report one to ten years of use; three later broke one (a drop, a move, an unstated cause). A matte black large chipped after two uses, a grey large owner chipped an earlier one (cause not given), and a 2012 buyer found store stock scratched. No owner reports how the botanical print wears.

Before buying

Choose it if you want a roughly 20 x 14 in showpiece for holiday roasts and have room to store it, but unpack it promptly since broken arrivals recur and no owner has yet reported how the botanical print wears.
