Owners love the Sashiko velvet's softness and hand-stitched look, but early stitch snags cloud its everyday durability

The retailer's 4.8-star average covers 161 unfiltered ratings pooled across the Sashiko velvet line; it is not a count of verified owners of the blue 20x20, and it can include reviews set aside below. We studied 124 distinct written reviews spanning 20x20 and 22x15 covers in burnt green, camel tan, deep indigo, travertine beige, spruce green, luminous red, chocolate brown, mist blue, storm grey and blue, plus a few feather or down-alternative insert bundles, so the pool is broader than the five named family members. Just one review covers the exact 20x20 blue cover; burnt-green 20x20 and camel-tan 22x15 owners are the largest groups. Thirteen reviews were set aside: one for a separate Sashiko Floral model, one from a buyer whose order had not arrived, and eleven storm-grey or travertine-beige reviews judged outside the family, though other travertine reviews were kept. One set-aside travertine-beige 20x20 owner said the color looked much more tan in person than the cream shown online. One more review's variant label conflicts with its text and is not relied on. Most reviews are short first impressions; the longest stated use is a few months to under a year.

Room×Lab rating: 6.6 out of 10 (limited confidence). Owners across the Sashiko velvet line praise its softness, color and hand-stitched look, which drives the score. The main caveat is durability: evidence is short-term and mixed, with a few reports of stitching snagging or loosening within weeks to under a year, and only one review covers the blue 20x20.

  • Durability reports are mixed and short-term: Linked records: 4 favorable, 3 critical mentions of how the covers hold up; only critical ones cite stitching. — Favorable accounts cite a few months of use or a commercial project, with short or no timeframes. Critical ones describe a first-week snag (22x15 camel tan), loose stitching after two weeks of daily use (20x20 chocolate brown) and loosening within a year (22x15 deep indigo bundles). No owner reports a year or more of use.
  • Soft velvet is the most consistent praise: Linked records: 28 favorable and no critical mentions about the velvet's softness. — Comments span many colors and both sizes. Some describe filled pillows, so plushness may partly reflect the insert. One owner who praised the softness also reported a thread snag in the first week.
  • Sashiko stitching look wins most owners over: Linked records: 16 favorable and 2 critical mentions about the stitching's look and consistency. — One 20x20 burnt-green owner said the stitched design looked nothing like the photo, and one 22x15 spruce-green owner found many loose threads sticking out. Both kept their covers. Crate & Barrel describes only subtle handcrafted variation; these are isolated reports, not a defect rate.

Before buying

Choose it for soft velvet and hand-stitched texture on pillows that are mostly admired, but expect stitch variation, budget for a separate insert, and treat daily-use durability as unproven beyond a few months.
