Kids and parents love the Modern Dome's touch control, but flicker and downward-only light are the recurring complaints
The retailer aggregate covers 62 unfiltered ratings and can include records excluded from product-specific claims; it is not a qualified-owner count. 60 distinct retailer comments were studied. Owner experience comes from Crate & Kids' own review pool, which is shared across the Modern Dome touch lamp colorways. Most reviews sit under the white listing, two are filed under green and two under purple. Of the purple two, one covers only a wrong-color shipment and refund delay. One white-listed owner also bought two grey units. Reviews date from 2020 to 2026. Settings include nurseries, toddler and grandchild rooms, an adult's bedside, a living room, and a grandparent with dementia. Only two owners explicitly used the green lamp, so green-specific evidence is thin. Findings from other colorways stay attributed to them because matching construction is unverified. The green and white spec pages list different cords and dimensions. No independent owner discussion was found outside the retailer.
Room×Lab rating: 5.8 out of 10 (limited confidence). Owners love the Modern Dome's kid-friendly touch control, sturdy metal build and gender-neutral look. The score is held back by repeated reports of flicker or buzzing on one brightness level, with no proven bulb fix, and by light that falls mostly downward.
- Touch control kids and busy parents can use: Linked records: 33 favorable and 6 critical mentions about the touch control. — Owners describe toddlers switching the lamp on alone and parents tapping it with an elbow or knuckle while holding a baby. Critics call the touch finicky or say it works better on the base than the shade. One owner of about eight months says it responds about 9 taps in 10. Owners disagree on where touch works.
- Flicker or buzz, often on one brightness level: Linked records: 13 critical and 2 favorable mentions about flicker or buzzing. — Reports span 2020 to 2026 and often involve the brightest setting, sometimes on two or three units, including a green and a purple lamp. Several owners tried LED, incandescent, dimmable, 3-way and smart bulbs without a fix. One green owner saw no flicker with a 60W incandescent, and another owner found a working bulb after a few tries.
- Downward light is poor for reading: Linked records: 8 critical and 3 favorable mentions about light for reading or the room. — Critics say the short lamp and metal dome mostly light the tabletop, so it works more like a nightlight or accent lamp. One green owner says it lit only a short toddler nightstand. On the other side, one owner reads books by it at night, a toddler reads in bed by it, and an adult likes it at their bedside, so placement height may matter.
Before buying
Buy the Modern Dome as a soft nursery or bedtime light kids can tap on themselves, not as a reading lamp. Test every brightness level with your bulb while you can still return it, because owners keep reporting flicker.
